Hey, I’m Andrew Mendoza and today I’m going to teach you how to build a blog content strategy in 5 steps.

First, why should you start a blog to make money online?

A blog work as a mediator for purchase decisions. It’s very common for potential customers to do some google searches about the product they are considering. And the blog is in the middle of this google search and the purchase.

Your blog will provide the customer with the information they need before making a decision. The blog is a third-party source of information, so the information provided will be much more credible than the information provided by the brand itself.

Building upon that, Google is the biggest search engine in the world, with up to 5.6 billion searches per day.

Now that you are aware of the opportunities you have with a blog, let’s get into the specifics.

1 – Choose A Niche

Everything starts with your niche, you need to have a specific audience and a specific topic to write about. It’s completely okay to have an umbrella topic and sub-topics within this umbrella topic. But it needs to make sense, it needs to be related.

Here are some tips to choose a niche that will give you a great shot at success:

Consider the profitability. You can think of profitability in a simples equation: search volume * revenue potential.

Don’t be afraid of competition. Competition means that the niche is profitable and there are people willing to buy the products. The only question is, can you do better than your competitors?

Choose something that you like, that you have some interest in. You don’t need to blog around your passion, but if you choose a topic you hate just because it’s more profitable, it will not be sustainable in the long haul.

After choosing a niche, let’s start talking about strategy.

2 – Choose Your Monetization Strategy

Your monetization strategy will guide your content and dictate the articles you’ll be writing about.

It’s possible to monetize your blog in a lot of different ways. In this article I’ll show you the 3 main ones:

1 – Affiliate Marketing

2 – Online Courses

3 – Ads

Usually, it’s easy to start by focusing on affiliate marketing. With affiliate marketing, you’ll write content making products reviews, and show your audience the bests products in your niche. For example, let’s suppose you choose to go into the camping niche, here are some examples of articles:

“Best 10 person tents”

“Best cold weather tent”

“Best waterproof tents”

“Best tent heaters”

Affiliate marketing is the bread and butter of blog monetization and the goal is to rank for valuable terms and products that people are searching for.

The second strategy, online courses, is great because you’re selling your own product, but you do need to be aware that it requires that you have an audience to sell for.

If you choose to sell a course, you’ll be writing “how-to articles” like how to make money online, how to start a blog, how to start a youtube channel. These types of content will help you build your audience and build your email list.

Monetizing with ads is the third method. Here, you can write articles about anything informational, you don’t need to be worried about the search intent behind the keyword. Your goal is to find topics with a high amount of traffic.

Usually, with ads, you’ll get 20 to 30 dollars per thousand impressions.

3 – Find Keywords For SEO

Ok, you have chosen your monetization strategy. Now it’s time to think about the keywords your target audience will put on Google. Here’s how…

Use YouTube and Google suggest. Start by writing on the engine the topic you want and write down the keywords google suggests. You can repeat the exact same process on YouTube.

The next tip is to use search as related to finding long-tail keywords. There are these related searches at the bottom of the page every time you do a Google search. It’s a gold mine for keyword ideas.

If you have a budget I recommend using Ahrefs or another related keyword tool to see more detailed data. When looking at the data in the keyword tool you can see the search volume and the competition for each keyword you’re targeting. A good strategy is to target keywords that have high traffic and low competition.

The last tip on Keyword research is to also look for keywords that will attract backlinks. To do that you need to find a topic with a proven track record.

You can do so by checking your competitors’ pages that are doing really well. Look for pages with a lot of social shares, lots of comments, and lots of referring domains.

4 – Build Your Content Calendar

If you don’t have scheduled and planned the content you need to write, it will be impossible to be productive. You’ll spend hours looking at other blogs, YouTube, online communities… And chances are that you’ll not find a good idea.

It will be a recipe for disaster.

The content calendar will help you stay organized, consistent and you’ll have at your fingertips everything you need to write about.

The goal is to schedule how many posts you’ll be updating over a period of time. You can choose if you want to build your calendar for the next 3 months, 6 months, and even a year.

Use your keyword list and all the research you have done until now. With that, lay down all the articles that will be published. You need to know how many posts you’ll be uploading per week and in which order.

You can use tools such as Trello and Google sheets.

5 – Publish And Promote Your Content

Now, it’s time to hit the publishing button and start to promote your content.

If you just publish your content, sit back, and just do nothing, I’m sorry to tell you but you are putting yourself at a tremendous disadvantage. Here are some promotion tips:

  • Share your content on your social media such as Facebook, Pinterest, and Twitter.
  • Build an email list and share your content through your newsletter.
  • Answer questions on quora.
  • Post on subreddits.
  • Guest post on popular blogs.
